From the Writer's Desk

Image
From the Writer's Desk This little fold up, lap desk is my reading, writing, working, thinking, and technically my sleeping space right now. Because I am between leases, this summer, I  have been staying in a tiny guest room at my great aunt and uncle’s house, here in Athens. My “Writer’s Desk” has not been very ideal these past few months, but I found this gem at TJ Maxx and it’s been my buddy this summer.  I work about 10-12 hours everyday, so I hardly get to be here, but I really look forward to coming back to my little bed and throwing the legs of my desk over me. I spend a lot of time by myself, and this place doesn’t really feel like home to me, but I’ve created myself a little space in bed that feels personal and comfortable to me. I think because I don’t get to be here a lot during the day, my “Writer’s Desk” feels special and like a bit of a treat to set up at the end of a long day. It has become a nice place to get my readings and schoolwork done. The hot pink ...

Reading Ladder Activity- Adolescent Literature

Image
The following Reading Ladder I have created is targeted for an 8th grade student who has shown an interest in exploring female empowerment and female social issues. Each text on the ladder would allow this student to see a strong female character in the book, while also gradually increasing the reading levels of the text and student exposure to issues that women have had and still have to face in our societies. I would strongly recommend this Reading Ladder to any student who may struggle with seeing their personal worth and capabilities, for the books may can serve as an encouragement to be yourself and to work hard for the things you value. This Reading Ladder begins with Flying Lessons and Other Stories, which is a novel written in a series of short stories. This novel is pertinent to the ladder because of its diverse author and characters. The stories cover everyday issues of young females navigating, school, friends, and life, but the book has a unexpected feminist twist ...

Twitter Chat #uga_yalit

I have only participated in one other Twitter Chat and I have to say that having discussion via tweet is an extremely fun experience. I appreciated the discussion because the questions either 1.) really made me think before I could respond or 2.) got me fired up because I have already (most likely just since this course has started) developed a strong perspective or response for that question.  I very much do not like to label things that do not necessarily require a label. Living in the gray has really become a part of my identity. So, if something doesn't need to be put in a box, I'd rather we just leave it on the floor or organize it some other way. However, I do understand the significant way this course has pushed me to think about the distinction between YA Literature as more an umbrella term and Middle Grades Literature as a sub-category. Doing so really shines a spotlight on all things Middle Grades- Middle Grades literature, Middle Grade level characters in stories, ...
